“Leap into Language 1” is divided into seven sections:
1. Letter Sounds
2. Making Words
3. Language Activities
4. Fill in the Word (Cloze)
5. Learn to Read
6. Stories and Questions
7. Just for Fun
- Letter Sounds: Students are introduced to initial consonants (primary and secondary spellings), initial consonant digraphs, and consonants in the final position.
- Making Words: Cedric the Starfish™ loves to play with words. Students make words by adding a letter at the beginning and end of a word, play with turn around words, “pot” and “top”, and select rhyming words to complete four line poems.
- Language Activities: Adding –ed, -ing, and –s to a word changes the way the word works in a sentence. Students have to make choices when adding the endings. Plurals are introduced in a novel way in this section.
- Fill in the Word (Cloze): With the help of several characters, students select the correct word from a word list to fill in a number of rhyming poems.
- Learn to Read: Little Blue™ wants to learn how to read. Miranda the Sea Otter™ leads Little Blue™ through early reading behaviours, e.g., holding a book properly, reading from left to right, words, and spaces between words. Miranda explains lower case and capital letters and how words must be put in a certain order to make sense.
- Stories and Questions: Mommy Blue™ and Little Blue™ have a frightening experience with Killer Whales. Students are asked questions and they must select the correct answers. There is an emphasis upon inferential comprehension.
